Colombia president calls on Trump to legalize international trade in cannabis

PetroIn response to the growing tensions between the Trump White House and Colombia, the South American nation's President Gustavo Petro called for replacing the policy of marijuana prohibition with a regulatory framework allowing for adult use and international export of cannabis, like "any good."

In an Oct. 20 post on Twitter (now called X), Petro pushed back at US "decertification" of Colombia as a Drug War partner, charging: "Consumption in the US and the growing consumption in Europe are responsible for 300,000 murders in Colombia and a million deaths in Latin America." He added that the imposition of high tariffs on Colombian exports will only further fuel cocaine production in the country.

Instead he proposed that Donald Trump adopt the "opposite" policy—removing tariffs on Colombian agricultural goods and legalizing the "export of cannabis," which should be treated like "any good." He pointed to the United Nations' recent decision to reschedule cannabis under international treaties to which both countries are parties.

Petro said that a model of "responsible and state-regulated consumption" of cannabis should be explored as a better option to undercut the criminal networks. (Marijuana Moment)
